Google to Spend Billions on War with Facebook

Two major internet corporations in Google and Facebook are currently at war with one another. Google is used to being the main search engine and answer for many Americans across the nation and people in other countries. You can usually type just about anything into the Google search engine and get an answer right back. This allowed Google to dominate the search engine world and surpass other companies like Yahoo or Bing. Now Google´s successes are being threatened by Facebook´s successes. As a result of Facebook´s newly gained popularity, Google feels threatened economically speaking. They feel as though Facebook is becoming the modern way to find out information leaving no need for search engines like Google. Because Facebook has a significant amount of workers less than Google, there is more money freed up to explore different avenues. More and more people are relying on Facebook now to get the latest buzz on things instead of running to Google. This issue is still maturing and neither company has seen any immense gain or loss due to this issue. Google os still the powerhouse and is still getting all the profit. Facebook is sneaking up and will slowly start to take over those Google lovers and convert them into Facebook lovers. Economically for both companies, it's a healthy dispute because it in turn forces the two companies to better themselves and give the consumer a better product in order to increase their profit.

Do you think Google would/could afford to buy Facebook? Do you think Facebook would accept this merger?

I don't think this will cause that big of a problem for Google. They are a search engine, Facebook is a social network. You use Facebook to find out things about people, and sometimes companies. But generally if you have a question, you're not going to type it in to Facebook.. Since that wouldn't give you many results anyway.

I agree with Alison, I don't think that Facebook is a threat to Google because the same amount of people use Facebook just as much as Google. But if for some reason Google tried to buy Facebook, I don't think they would accept it because they are doing so well right now and still rising in popularity. If they changed their layout or the home page of Facebook that everybody loves, they might lose some popularity.

Yes, I definitely think that Google could afford to buy Facebook and enhance it to be way more popular than it is right now. Facebook would possibly be okay with partnering up with Google. Both companies could benefit drastically by this and see great revenue. By teaming up with each other, they would show an example to other search engine providers and social networking sites. In the future there may be more and more teams such as that one like Twitter and Bing, or Myspace and Yahoo.

Alison, while you are right as far as Google being a search engine and Facebook being a social network, Facebook is enhancing their site and who knows what's to come for Facebook. In the next ten years who knows what avenue Facebook will go down and if they will explore new ideas to offer Google-like options. This is why it's creating such a problem, because of the unknown and the future expectations of both companies.

I think Facebook and Google merger would cause some kind of ripples somewhere. If you think about it if Facebook and Google merged, Facebook improvements would have endless resources to keep themselves at the top of the social network competition for an extended period of time. This will not only strengthen Google's status as the top search engine but keep it there as well.

I think that Google will be fine. There will always be a need for search engines. People can get a lot of information through Facebook, but search engines are still so much easier to use. Plus Google has their hands in so many other projects, that I don't think they need to worry about Facebook hurting them in the long run.

I think Google is going to be the major search engine for a long time. Both Facebook and Google have become household names. For example, "Hey what's your email?" "Just Facebook me!" or "How many legs does a centipede have?" "I don't know.... Google it." The companies are among the greats like Coca-Cola and McDonald's. When it comes to the internet what more do you need than Facebook and Google? The problem with that is that in todays world one head is better than two. It will be interesting to see who takes control and chops the other head off in the future.

I believe google is over reacting. Facebook doesn't seem to want to become a search engine for facts or questions that people need answers too. Google also doesn't want to become a social network. Both companies going down separate paths. By having this lawsuit google seems threatened, but over what?

This is a good point Alissa. I know personally I spend more time on Facebook than I do searching for things on Google. The average time each person spends on these sites could be huge to what Google is arguing here. Facebook has obviously been gaining a lot every single day and Google has a valid reason to feel threatened by them.

Just as Zach said, Google will be a popular search engine for quite some time but since people aren't always searching, Facebook is more popular. Especially since people tend to have Facebook apps on their phone, they are more likely to spend more time on Facebook than on Google. If these two companies were to merge, it would basically be a powerhouse over all other websites. Google could easily buy Facebook but I don't believe Facebook will be willing to sell.

I don't think that Facebook is that large of a threat to Google. Facebook is widely considered more useful to find information on social events, trends, and other happenings dealing with pop culture. Google, however, encompasses all aspects of the Internet. While Facebook may be better to find underground happenings, Google is useful for finding any facts or information. Both Google and Facebook will always remain huge cyber-powers. While their services are similar, there are certain differences that will keep them from being competition to one another. They will simply co-exist as huge cyber-powers.

The question being posed here is whether Facebook can replace Google as the top search engine. In my opinion, I do not believe that Facebook has the necessary tools available to perform thorough searches of a myriad of different topics. Facebook does provide its users with valuable here-and-now information, but Google has this ability and more. However, these two companies view each other as competitors and this will encourage enhancements at both sites. Different age groups may align themselves with one site; the younger generation utilizing Facebook and the older generation remaining loyal to Google. I believe that Google will continue to monopolize the search engine domain.
